Posting frequently does not guarantee account growth. In the restaurant industry, the difference lies in building a recognisable content strategy, maintaining it over time, and measuring which formats generate the most visibility and engagement.
This is the case of a 100% plant-based restaurant in central Barcelona that started with an Instagram community of 3,456 followers when management began. Eight months later, it had reached 7,145 followers — a cumulative growth of 106.7% — with more than 850,000 views during the period analysed and engagement peaks above 6.8% on posts.
This case shows how a consistent content strategy can transform a restaurant’s digital presence without relying on a single viral spike.
Why does a restaurant need a content strategy instead of simply posting photos of its dishes?
An account can post frequently and still fail to build a recognisable identity. An editorial strategy helps define what is communicated, how it is communicated, and the role each format plays within the brand’s overall communication.
In the restaurant industry, Instagram acts as a touchpoint before the visit: it allows people to discover the food offering, get a sense of the atmosphere, and understand the brand before booking a table or visiting the restaurant. That is why the goal was not simply to showcase dishes, but to translate the restaurant’s personality consistently into the digital environment.
The challenge was to turn the restaurant’s real-world offering — plant-based cuisine, food, dining space, and atmosphere — into a content strategy capable of consistently building awareness, engagement, and community growth.
What strategy can grow an Instagram community consistently over time?
The work was structured around four key areas: editorial strategy, audiovisual production, consistent publishing, and monthly data-driven optimisation.
- Content strategy. Building a consistent editorial approach around the restaurant experience, combining food, atmosphere, product, and moments in the dining room.
- Audiovisual production. Regular use of Reels to showcase dishes, preparation, atmosphere, and the overall experience in a more dynamic way than static photography.
- Consistency. Ongoing publication of posts, Reels, and Stories, avoiding reliance on one-off actions or the virality of a single piece of content.
- Optimisation. Monthly analysis of key metrics to identify which formats generate the most engagement, saves, shares, and net community growth.
The result was sustained growth: in every month of the period analysed, the account ended with a positive net follower balance, without relying on a single growth spike.
What role does video play in growing a restaurant’s Instagram account?
Video became a key part of the strategy because it can show, in just a few seconds, elements that a photograph does not always capture: preparation, movement, atmosphere, service, and the dining experience.
Reels consistently achieved engagement rates of between 4% and 5%, with one particularly significant result: in one month during the period, engagement reached 7.80% with just two Reels published. In another month, four Reels generated nearly 160 interactions, including almost 40 saves and around 20 shares.
Those saves and shares are what matter most. The goal was not simply to increase the volume of posts, but to create formats capable of generating higher-value actions than a simple “like” — actions that signal to Instagram that the content deserves greater reach.
How do you measure whether a social media strategy is working?
Follower count is only one part of the analysis. To assess progress, visibility, engagement, and audience response to the different content formats were also tracked.
The strategy maintained positive community growth throughout the entire period analysed, without relying on a single short-term growth spike. During the period with comparable reports, the account generated more than 850,000 cumulative views and maintained typical post engagement rates of between 5% and 6%, with peaks of 6.8%.
These figures, together with sustained community growth, make it possible to assess overall performance without disclosing the business’s monthly data in detail.
Results: a community that grew by 106.7%
Los principales resultados del proyecto:
+106,7% community growth since the start of management
+3.689 net followers since the start of management
+850K cumulative views during the period analysed
6,8% peak engagement on posts
The account grew from 3,456 to 7,145 followers from the start of management and maintained positive net growth every month throughout the period analysed. The value of this case does not lie in a single post, but in the combination of strategy, consistent content production, and ongoing data analysis.
What can other restaurants learn from this case?
This case offers several lessons that can be applied to other restaurant businesses looking to build a stronger presence on social media:
- Consistency helps build a recognisable content identity. A strong piece of content can generate a short-term spike, but sustained growth relies on a strategy maintained consistently over several months.
- Video expands storytelling possibilities. In the restaurant industry, video makes it possible to showcase preparation, food, the dining space, and atmosphere in a single format, making it an essential part of the content mix.
- Regular measurement helps make better decisions. Analysing changes in visibility, engagement, and community growth makes it possible to identify which formats are worth strengthening, adjusting, or dropping.
- Community size is an indicator of brand awareness, not a conversion in itself. That is why follower growth should be assessed alongside visibility and engagement, avoiding directly attributing bookings or revenue to social media unless specific tracking is in place.
